Skullcap (Scutellaria) is a wild growing medicinal from the mint family.
Medicinally skullcap is one of my most favorite plant teachers.
It is considered a "nervine" meaning it relaxes and soothes an overactive nervous system.
Which these days who doesn't need that nervous system to calm down, amiright?
Back to the biology... skullcap is a powerful antioxidant, in addition to its powerful effects on the nervous system. Modern western medicine is even now starting to actively study this plant and are finding proof that it may help protect against neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, anxiety, and depression. There's even some evidence to suggest that American skullcap may inhibit food allergic response.
Wild food is an everyday miracle. This plant has been part of our ancestors medicine cabinet for centuries. Add it your life and watch what happens.
For our fellow gardeners out there: It grows all over North America, if you would like to try to grow it yourself. ( I personally munch on the leaves when having a hard day).
Tinctures are one of the most easy and direct forms of ingestion of this herb.
